PHCN, Financial Institutions Introduce Online Electricity Payment System
9th OCT 2006
By Taiwo Hassan
AS part of efforts aimed at easing payment of electricity bills in the country, the management of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) plc in partnership with some financial institution recently launched an online mode of payment known as the PHCN easy payment solution.
Speaking at the launch, the national co-ordinator liaison unit of PHCN, Alhaji Shuaibu Maigida noted that the initiative was informed by the on-going reforms of the Federal Government in the power sector.
"Since the on-going power sector reform by the government is near completion, we saw a need for PHCN to look outward in finding solution to the means of payment which will further increase cash collection and revenue generations for the company," he said.
}"
Observation:
This is a great achievement for the country. My only concern here is the motivation for this implementation. It's very evident from Alhaji Shuaibu Maigida's comment that PHCN's revenue generation objective superceeded the convenience of it's consumers (the Nigerian citizens). The consumer's concern came in secondary on the list of benefits for this accomplishment. Quality of life in Nigeria will improve when the employers of labour as well as the Federal government begin to place the consumer experince at the very top of their accomplishments. After all said and done, the consumers are ultimately responsible for the company's perfomance at the market place.

If the need to get their customers to pay their electric bills promptly and regularly would ensure steady and uninterrupted electricity supply, that would be a great achievement. I will keep my cynicism in check.

Perhaps this could change the mind-set of many Nigerians who complain, albeit ineffectively, about power cut and yet are happy not to pay bills.
It's not a one-way street, but when people start paying for power, they will make real demand as to how the power is supplied. Most Nigerians need to get used to paying bills.

The prequisite of any contract with a new energy company is that payments can be made efficiently by as many users as quickly as possible. Users can expect more cunning and forceful methods to be devised in order to tempt these foreign companies to buy and therefore control the infrastructure that is fundemental to the country's development. Loss of employment/training, education and revenue that is paid to the companies by consumers that leaves the country as profits. Like food aid organisations the companies will continually look for ways to entrench their position so that we seemingly could not live without them. If they do eventually leave there will be a system that cannot be operated and maintained due to the abscence of the development of a skilled and experienced workforce. These kind of core privatisations do not work (at least not for the users) in europe, africa, s.amerca or any other part of the world other than to create a oligopy or monopoly.

I feel that the boss of PHCN should consider first and foremost the issue of power generation before looking for easy ways to get bills paid. It is a shame that a country that is considered the "giant of Africa" cannot give consistent power supply to its citizens (at least the paying ones). We run generators as if it is going out of vogue everyday. In the midnight you look out of your window and you are visited by gross darkness across the city of Lagos. PHCN let there be light and your bills will be paid as you want it done.

The next leader of Nigeria should make this a priority. After 8 years of Obasanjo's leadership we are no way near constant electricity and water supply.
Are these not directly related to slow rate of development and increase in rate of unemployment and crime?
This MUST BE A PRIORITY. Please!

The online payment system is not as good as the new prepayment system. I think the government have taking a bold step considered to be the best ever made. Kudos once more to the Nigeria government and his economic team.

PHCN keeps making noise about new records and yet there's no significant improvement on the ground. The govt should deal with this deeply-rooted power problem once and for all.
